You’ve been told you need a root canal to save your tooth and remove an infection, and you’re wondering if you’re in for a painful experience. Historically, root canals had a reputation for being unpleasant, so it’s natural to feel nervous. However, our root canal treatment at Tampa Implant and General Dentistry is painless and straightforward.
What is a root canal?
A root canal (endodontic treatment) is a dental procedure used to remove an infection from the pulp, save the tooth, and prevent reinfection. This procedure will help preserve your natural tooth, alleviate pain, and restore your dental health.
When do you need a root canal?
You may need a root canal for a chipped or cracked tooth, deep decay from an untreated cavity, or complications from a previous filling. Symptoms that may indicate you need root canal therapy include:
- Tooth sensitivity (particularly to hot and cold)
- Severe pain while biting or chewing
- Bumps or pimple-like swellings on the gum
- Darkening of the gums or deep decay
- Tender or swollen gums
- A cracked or chipped tooth
- An abscessed tooth
Important: Address the need for a root canal promptly, as the infection can spread and cause issues beyond your mouth.
How long do root canals take?
Typically, a root canal treatment takes about 30 to 60 minutes, with more complex cases potentially lasting up to 90 minutes or longer. The procedure usually requires one or two appointments to complete.
How are root canals performed?
Dr. Gary at Tampa Implant and General Dentistry will first x-ray your teeth to assess the viability of the procedure and check if the infection has spread. They’ll then numb the area with a local anesthetic.
Once numb, Dr. Gary will access the affected pulp through a small opening in your tooth. They’ll remove the infected pulp, clean all the canals in your tooth, and apply antibiotics to prevent reinfection. Finally, they’ll fill and seal your tooth. You may be prescribed oral antibiotics and over-the-counter pain medications to manage any post-procedure discomfort.
Does it hurt?
Thanks to local anesthesia, you won’t feel pain during the root canal procedure. The pain associated with root canals typically comes from the infected tooth before treatment. In fact, removing the infection eliminates the pain. Painful root canals are largely a myth.
At Tampa Implant and General Dentistry, we use anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. You may feel slight pressure on your tooth, but nothing more. It’s normal to experience mild discomfort for a few days after the procedure, which can be managed with pain medications. If pain persists beyond a week, contact us.
Root canals aren’t as intimidating as they once were, so don’t hesitate to discuss your concerns with your dentist.
